Like most major life transitions, there are surprises, disappointments, and unexpected detours. If not planned for, spousal relationships, in particular, can be put to the test. The numbers associated with "Gray Divorces" are alarming:
- Divorce rates for seniors have doubled over two decades (1990-2010).
- One in four people going through a divorce is at least 50 years old.
- The rate among women has tripled (from 4 percent to 12 percent).
Couples may not share the same vision of what an ideal retirement looks like. The fact of the matter is that ReFirement is an experiment in activity, relationship, and time, and may take several tries to achieve the right balance.
Here are three questions to get the ball rolling:
- Do you have enough?
- Have you had enough?
- Will you have enough to do?
During our coaching engagement, we lead you through 5 different conversations facilitated by worksheets to get you thinking and talking. The goal is to have structured conversations about the following five subjects:
1. Perceptions
What have you observed about people who are currently retired? What have you identified as some traits of happy retirees? What about unhappy retirees? We will supplement this discussion with our own experiences with clients who have made both successful, and maybe not-so successful transitions into retirement.2. Direction
Research shows that people who are retiring TO something are more successful in retirement than people who are just retiring FROM something. What is the correct direction for you? Does it mean moving to a vacation destination, taking on part-time or volunteer work, or a calendar full of tee times.3. Work
Traditionally, when a person retires, he or she doesn’t work anymore. For both social and economic reasons, that’s no longer true of all retirees. Do you want to keep working? Do you want to take a part-time job to keep active? Or maybe turn a lifelong hobby into a dream side business? Do you have to keep working in order to make ends meet?4. Agreement
Often couples struggle in retirement because each person has a very different idea of what retirement is going to look like. Maybe one person envisions non-stop globe-trotting, and the other just wants to string up a hammock in the backyard. We can help facilitate this conversation to make sure that both people experience happiness and fulfillment in retirement.5. Money
Have you answered this question: “Do I have enough money to retire?” If the answer is yes, the next goal is creating the best life possible with the money you have. This means identifying your common values and connecting your financial decisions with your values to assure that you are getting the highest return of life. How To Get Started...click the "Subscribe" button at the top of the page to receive an email of our newest blog posts...Next inquire about our "Coaching Starter Package" - two 90 minute coaching sessions with Rob & Paula to kickstart your ReFirement vision/conversation...for more details and cost email us at grey@ReFirement.Life or call us at 303-710-2574
